Riverdale, NY - The Fordham women earned a 60-49 decision over Manhattan Wednesday at Draddy Gymnasium. In the process, they won their first game of the season, captured a road game and as a bonus, the bragging rights extra, the ‘Battle of the Bronx.’ The numbers of note:
Possessions: Fordham 68, Manhattan 67
Offensive Efficiency: Fordham 88, Manhattan 73

eFG %: Fordham 49, Manhattan 33
Free Throw Rate: Manhattan 39, Fordham 35
Offensive Rebound %: Fordham 36, Manhattan 31
Turnover Rate: Manhattan 24, Fordham 28
What Fordham did well: Finish. In a tough game on the road with the contest even down the stretch, Fordham finally broke the Manhattan pressure by going on a late game spurt to seal the verdict. The best of the finishers was junior forward G’mrice Davis with a game-high 19 points.
What Manhattan did well: Defend. The Jaspers held the Atlantic 10 visitors to an 88 efficiency, a strong defensive showing. In addition, their pressure forced the Rams into an extremely high 28 percent turnover rate.

Manhattan coach John Olenowski was pleased with his club’s defense. He openly admitted the offensive execution left a lot to be desired. The efficiency as a team was an extremely subpar 73. Individually, among the eight Jasper players logging ten or more minutes, only one, Kayla Grimme, had a double-digit efficiency (10). The sophomore center shot only 1-of-6, (4 points) but did have a team-high eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Fordham coach Stephanie Gaitley called this group a ‘point guard by committee.’ She did give the Jaspers credit for their pressure forcing turnovers. Gaitley said the strength is in the frontcourt, (30-14 points in the paint edge) as Samantha Clark (10 points, 12 boards) complimented Davis. The backcourt is still the work in progress. Asnate Fomina, a sophomore guard from Latvia, logged a solid 31 minutes with eight points and a game-high six assists against three turnovers. Overall, the Rams assisted on 86 percent of their field goals (19 assists on 22 FGM).
Both clubs are 1-1. The Rams dropped their opener at Penn State, while Manhattan was victorious at FDU.
