Saint Peter's/Quinnipiac: Ray Floriani's Boxscore Analysis

JERSEY CITY, NJ – A tale of two halves. Saint Peter’s had enough, as it turned out, in the first twenty minutes to upset Quinnipiac 74­-67 at the Yanitelli Center on Hall of Fame Sunday. The first half numbers:

Outstanding defense saw the Peacocks build a 32-­20 lead at intermission.

The second half saw Quinnipiac make a run, but the Bobcats were unable to overtake John Dunne’s club. Second half numbers:

Quinnipiac outscored Saint Peter’s 47­-42, but it was not enough. The final numbers:

Jumping out to that halftime lead as a result of solid defense, plus holding off an opposing run was especially pleasing to Saint Peter's, who improved to 6­-9 and 2-­4 in the MAAC. Tom Moore’s Bobcats are now 9­-6 and 4-­2 in conference.

Added numbers of note: Ike Azotam and Ousmane Drame of Quinnipiac were rebounding pace setters with 14 each. Quinnipiac had four players in double figures. led by Drame’s 17 points. Quadir Welton scored only two points for Saint Peter’s, but the 6-­7 freshman added 11 boards and two blocks. Chris Burke's 18 points paced four double-digit scorers for Saint Peter’s.

Quinnipiac pounded the offensive glass with a 21-­9 advantage. Again, Azotam (7) and Drame (5) led the way, but 33 percent shooting (including 2-of-11 from three) proved to be the visitor’s undoing.

Key Four Factor stat: Free throw rate. Saint Peter’s got to the line, and often, with a 41­-24% free throw rate edge. The Peacocks canned 22 of their 26 tries (85%).
